August 5, 2001: Montel Bello Open Space Preserves

This was a somewhat strenuous hike on a trail that had perhaps 70% opens space and 30% shade.  From the lowest elevation to the highest, it was probably close to 1000 ft.  Because of the open space and sun, we took frequent breaks to catch our breath and to replenish lost water.  But we were rewarded with fantastic views of both the inner bay and of the west to the ocean.  We passed through open fields, shady oak groves, saw christmas tree farms, and hiked past a horseshoe shaped pond and ate lunch at another lovely little pond - Alpine pond.  There, we picked wild blackberries and some got to feed the fish!  7 people came on this hike and started from the Monte Bello (beautiful mountain) parking lot and ended at the Russian Ridge parking lot.

A beautiful view atop Black Mountain.  Looking directly west.  In the distance is the Pacific.

Downhill, finally!

Alpine Pond.  Too tired to stand up for the picture :)

Yes, it's finally lunch time!  In the shade by Alpine Pond.  Very relaxing!

Now that we're full, let's feed the fish!
