3/1/2008 Mystery Hike #9: Forest of Nisene Marks (19 mi/3000 ft)

  • 1) 18 people went on this hike. 2 no-shows (marks given).
    * 8 first-time hikers (with phuang)
    * 4 cars (4, 4, 3, and 7 from 2 carpool locations: Sunnyvale Sports Basement and Milpitas VTA park & ride).
    * All were on-time, thank you so much, everyone!
    * 15 hikers went to restaurant in Milpitas 99 Ranch plaza afterwards (see pics for dishes)!

    2) Total distance: 19 miles, Total elevation gain: 3,000'
    3) Started hiking at 8:44 am, finished at 4:24 pm; 7 hrs 40 min.
    * Total average pace: 2.48 mph (7.67 hrs)
    * Break time: ~ 1.3 hr
    * Average pace (when moving): 2.98 mph

  • A 20-question quiz was distributed at the start of the hike and then discussed during lunch. The idea was to learn a little bit about outdoors and first aid :). Click here to see the questions and answers.

  • This was a very gently-sloped mystery hike, which, despite a total elevation gain of about 3,000', was not very strenuous. The distance, however, may have been more significant, especially towards the end. The weather was quite nice for this hike at Forest of Nisene Marks. Mostly shaded and wide trails gave everyone a chance to hike at a decent pace. We had quite a few newcomers (8) who all came prepared and on-time. Very proud of everyone for finishing this rather long hike. See you on a future hike.
